Documentation > User Manuals > v1.2.0 User Manual > Painting

MyPaint uses only one active colour (no foreground/background). However, the colour previews will display two colours while you adjust the colour: The old colour and the new colour with changes.

Numeric Colour Values

To enter numeric color values you can: Open the Colour Details popup by double clicking on a colour swatch in the Palette panel. This will overwrite this palette swatch. Open the (same) Set Current Colour popup from the Footer bar by clicking on the icon right to the Colour preview. This does not change any palette swatch, but highlights the one closest to the selected color. Hue sets the position in the color spectrum.

Colour Selectors

MyPaint offers a variety of ways to choose and change colours. Besides the common digital HSV colour wheels there are three “intuitive” color mixers that are closer to analogue paint mixing: Crossed bowl, Liquid Wash, Concentric Rings. It is also possible to save and load colours in the [[Colour Palette|https://github.com/mypaint/mypaint/wiki/v1.2-Palette]] (Shift+C). The Palette has further options that can be accessed with the top right wrench icon. The only other colour panel with additional options is the [[HCY wheel, which supports Gamut Masking|v1.

Adjust Colour with Menu and Shortcuts

It is possible to use the menu or keyboard shortcuts to adjust tint and tone of the active colour without the need to pick it manually: Main Menu Colour → Adjust Colour. However, you need to set those shortcuts in the settings first.
